Mad dogs and white supremacy courtesy of our national broadcaster

So I watched RTE’s Saturday Night Show with Brendan O’Connor last night for the first and last time in my life.

I’m not really sure where in Ireland or in which decade the host lives but I live in an Ireland where the President of the USA deserves a bit more respect than to be called “the black guy” on a prime time chat show on our national channel.

His guest, Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh, was visibly aghast and was quick to rebuttle O’Connor’s remark about Walsh being “one of our own.” What was more shocking was that the host didn’t realise he’d made a highly offensive remark nor did his audience chorus a boo in unison.

The show concluded with Adele King aka Twink and her rescued dog and what appeared to be a live psychotic episode. I could think of something nasty and funny but instead I’ll say I was simply traumatised. Terrible viewing and a poor case for subsidising light entertainment.

So I told a few of the swimmers about the show this morning and one simply asked ‘why would you watch that?’ Yes indeed, best question of and about the show.
